What is Indian Head Massage
IHM is a hands on therapy which can is performed by the therapist to rub, knead and squeeze the body’s soft tissues such as muscles. This is done with the use of oils and includes the upper back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands, scalp and face.
There is no need for you to remove your clothes, unless you want to. Some clients prefer to have direct skin massage rather than through their clothing.
History and Theory of Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system which is believed to have been practised in India for over 5000 years, incorporating mind, body and spirit. It strives to restore balance and inner harmony and improved health to an individual.
Indian women traditionally performed the massage and the technique would be passed down from generation to generation. Due to the climate of India, hair would become very dry. The women would use oils during the massage to keep hair in beautiful condition by stimulating blood flow to the scalp, thus nourishing the hair roots. They used different oils according to the time of year and region including coconut oil and mustard oil.
As well as the physical and psychological benefits associated with the treatment it also gave the added bonus of improving bonds. Indian tradition includes a new born receiving a massage on the day of birth and a couple due to be married will receive Indian head massage.
Over time Hairdressers and barbers began refer to the massage as champi and began to offer Indian Head Massage to both their male and female customers as it complimented their main service.
Originally it was almost exclusively concerned with massage of the head and hair follicles, although over time it has developed to incorporate massage and manipulation of the face, scalp, neck, upper back, shoulders and upper arms.
